The super-infectious Omicron variant of the new corona virus has pushed cases to record highs and caused chaos as the exhausted world once again struggles to contain the spread. But this time is not starting from scratch.

"Some areas will be struggling"

Even so, some parts of the world (especially low-income countries that lack adequate vaccines or treatments) will still face difficulties, while other countries will be more likely to transition to what scientists call an "epidemic" state.

Stephen Kissler, an infectious disease expert at Harvard University's Chen Zengxi School of Public Health, said: "The difference between them is very vague." He defined the epidemic period as reaching "some acceptable stable state" in response to the new corona virus.

"We will not go back to 2019," said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. "We have to make people think about risk tolerance."

BC Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said last week that she believes the province will eventually see the end of the pandemic.

She said in a year-end interview: "The virus changes with Omicron, which will allow us to reach that goal faster." "The type of disease it causes, and most of us are protected by vaccination."

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top infectious disease expert in the United States, hopes to control the virus in a way that "does not disrupt society or destroy the economy."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shortened the period of quarantine for patients with COVID-19 to 5 days to avoid infecting other people, and stated that it is clear that they are the most infectious in the early stages.

Omicron has once again promoted the increase in cases, and India will launch vaccine enhancers for front-line workers in January. Dr. Jacob John, the former director of virology at the Christian College of Medicine, said that influenza and measles will periodically cause epidemics, and even after Omicron is eliminated, the corona virus will continue to break out frequently.

Omicron's mutation is so large that it is getting rid of some protection from vaccination or previous infection. But Dr. William Moss of the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University predicts that "this virus will reach its limit" and be able to achieve such a big evolutionary leap. "I don't think this is an endless loop of new variants."
