Antibody Tests introduction

Tests that detect antibodies (eg, IgM, IgG) against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.Serology/antibody tests cannot be used to diagnose a current infection, but can confirm current or past infections. Monitoring testing with these types of tests is popular due to the reduced cost of testing.Commercially produced antibody tests that check for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in individuals are available through healthcare providers and commercial laboratories. CDC is working with the following federal organizations to evaluate the performance of these tests:

  • Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority COVID-19 test kit

  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

  • National Institutes of Health

  •  Department of Defense

Diagnostic Tests that detect some of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and can be used to diagnose SARS-CoV-2 virus infection. These include molecular tests and antigen tests.COVID-19 rapid test kits,point-of-care diagnostic test kits use a mucus sample from the nose/throat or blood, but can be analyzed at the doctor's office or clinic where the sample was collected and results may be available within minutes. These may be molecular or antigenic tests.Home sample collection devices are prescribed by doctors but allow patients to collect samples at home and send them directly to a laboratory for evaluation. The saliva COVID-19 test allows patients to spit saliva into a tube rather than swab their nose or throat.A saliva test may be more comfortable for some people and safer for healthcare workers who may be farther apart during sample collection.
